I am deeply saddened to hear the news that Joseph S. Nye Jr. has passed away at the age of 88. He was a Harvard University Distinguished Service Professor, Emeritus, whose ideas on the nature of power in international relations influenced generations of policymakers, academics, and students, making him one of the world’s most celebrated political thinkers.
Nye developed the concepts of soft power, smart power, and neoliberalism over six decades. His ideas transformed our understanding of power, leadership, and diplomacy. His work explained the growing importance of interdependence and analyzed the nature of global power itself.
I have opportunity to translate a lot of his commentaries for Project Syndicate into Vietnamese. His insights on current world affairs had a positive effect on me. Reading and translating his contribution on Project Syndicate is like attending a masterclass in practical resoning of theories of international relations. He also inspiringly shows how the pinciples of diplomacy in the modern world must avoid parochialism and address vital questions of global peace.
Celebrating the life of a great person. Someone so special can never be forgotten.
Dear Prof. Nye,
Thank you for the inspiration and encouragement you have provided. Thinking of you and your family. R.I.P. Please accept my sincerest condolences to your family.
